I really like Head First Design Patterns<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0596007124?ie=UTF8&tag=woanorg-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0596007124>for learning and using the patterns (code in Java as opposed to C++ helps), and the authors are local to Seattle. I still recommend the original GoF Design Patterns<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0201633612?ie=UTF8&tag=woanorg-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0201633612>as better getting across what a pattern is and how to catalog them.
