Title: Recommendation Service in Consumer Applications
Speaker: Maria Zhang, Founder & CEO of UrbanQ
Abstract:
I will go through a few examples of recommendation services in consumer 
facing online and mobile applications, including NetFlix, Pandora and 
Amazon. I will share how these  recommendation services are differentiated, 
and the business value each brings. Lastly, I will share my experience in 
building a personalized mobile application with a recommendation service, 
and how recommendation service could be of tremendous value to a mobile 
application.
Bios:
15 years of experience in large scale data mining and machine learning 
solutions. Maria led Zillow’s Data Integration and Warehousing team. She was 
the principal dev manager over the Personal Relevance team for MSN and 
delivered one of the largest real time optimization systems, serving 200 
million users with significant lift in user engagement. Currently, she is 
the founder and CEO of UrbanQ, Inc. UrbanQ delivered award winning mobile 
applications and the Location Genome Platform which enables any app 
developer to offer 100% national location data coverage with intelligent 
personalized end user interactions

Title: An Introduction to Recommendation Engines
Speaker: Mukund Narasimhan, Software Engineer of Facebook
Abstract:
In this talk, I'll present some of the statistical and computational issues 
in building a recommendation system. I'll give an overview of some of the 
commonly used algorithms,and discuss some of the challenges involved in 
adapting them to a social context, and to be more responsive to the users 
needs. 
Bios:
Mukund Narasimhan is a software engineer in the Entities team at Facebook, 
where he works on building tools and systems for mining nformation from 
data. He has previously been a principal engineer at Amazon, a researcher at 
Microsoft and a chip designer at Intel. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical 
Engineering from the University of Washington, and a M.S. in Mathematics 
from Louisiana State University.

Speaker: Ting-Hao Yang, VP of Hulu
Abstract:
Hulu is one of the leading premium video streaming services, with huge 
content and user base. This creates a great opportunity for recommender 
system to improve user experience, media partner and advertiser interest. In 
this talk, I will present a high level overview of how content 
recommendation and advertisement personalization technologies are used on 
Hulu, including the applications, algorithms, innovations and business 
impact.
Bios:
 Ting-hao Yang is Vice President of Research and Development Center of 
Hulu.com, one of the leading premium video streaming services. He has 
managed Hulu’s R&D center in Beijing, China since late 2007. Ting has built 
and led the center to deliver several core technologies, including search, 
recommender system, AD targeting and frontend player components. Prior to 
joining Hulu, Ting worked as lead software developer and engineer at 
Microsoft. Ting obtained his M.S. in Computer Science from University of 
Illinois, Urbana Champaign in 2000.
