Hi all, I submitted a new version of draft-ietf-alto-deployments. I changed the naming of some sections and also shifted text inside the document to have a more consistent structure, and this is why the diff shows a large number of changes. However, I hardly removed any content from the document. Basically, the intention of -08 is to have a baseline for future improvements of the content.
The major changes in -08 include: * ToC naming changes * New text in Section 2.2.3. More Advanced Deployments * Existing text on data sources moved from later sections to Section 3.2 Provisioning of ALTO Maps * Significant rewording of Section 3.4. Map Examples for Different Types of ISPs, including a small network and cost map example for illustration * New section 6 for non-P2P and non-CDN use cases, currently only addressing draft-deng-alto-p2pcache (requested by the authors), further use cases still TBD * Moving "Monitoring ALTO" to an Appendix. I have not managed to address the performance directorate review so far, but probably this section will have to be removed in its current form * Numerous editorial bugfixes It is obvious that further updates is needed and will happen - I just posted what I could get done before the deadline. Comments would still be very welcome. This draft is a work item of the Application-Layer Traffic Optimization Working Group of the IETF. Title : ALTO Deployment Considerations Author(s) : Martin Stiemerling Sebastian Kiesel Stefano Previdi Michael Scharf Filename : draft-ietf-alto-deployments-08.txt Pages : 44 Date : 2013-10-21 Abstract: Many Internet applications are used to access resources such as pieces of information or server processes that are available in several equivalent replicas on different hosts. This includes, but is not limited to, peer-to-peer file sharing applications. The goal of Application-Layer Traffic Optimization (ALTO) is to provide guidance to applications that have to select one or several hosts from a set of candidates, which are able to provide a desired resource. This memo discusses deployment related issues of ALTO. It addresses different use cases of ALTO such as peer-to-peer file sharing and CDNs, security considerations, recommendations for network administrators, and also guidance for application designers using ALTO.
