Hi Richard, all, Certainly it was very interesting to present at MOPS WG the advances on ALTO integration in Telefonica and to get questions and feedback from their side.
Apart from the presentation pointer shared by Med, the group can take a look at the minutes [1] and the video recording of the ALTO presentation in MOPS session [2]. As summary of the questions, they were focused on the operational aspects of this integration. Let me summarize them. R. K. Rajeev, from picoNETS (a CDN provider) asked about the handling of both the network and cost maps in order to provide the pursued network awareness to the CDN overlay, helping me to clarify that a further processing is needed by the CDN logic in order to filter the PIDs of interest. That is, the CDN logic takes into account the ones that relate CDN streamers with end-user prefixes per central office, not requiring the consideration of e.g. the relationship among PIDs of end-users only. Another question from Rajeev serve to clarify that the PIDs related to end-users group all the IP prefix ranges declared in each central office. Éric Vyncke, from Cisco, asked about the expected frequency of the information retrieval. This helped me to clarify the fact that a weekly or even daily retrieval could be sufficient. It should be noted that in the present mode of operation the manual topology update is every 6 months, so the advantage of leveraging on ALTO is clear in the pathway towards general automation of an efficient delivery of contents with up-to-date information of the underlying network. Finally, Sanjay Mishra, from Verizon, asked if the ALTO capabilities are considered to be offered to third parties (i.e., external consumers of network information such as topology, etc). The answer is yes, so ALTO can be queried by such 3rd parties. Finally Sanjay asked about how to handle the selection of streamers, and this served me to clarify that the logic of the CDN takes into consideration more information such as the availability of the requested content per streamer, its load status, etc. My objective is to provide further details of this integration for IETF 115 since we expect to complete the deployment in the production network of one of the Telefonica’s operation at that time. Operational insights of this integration can be of interest, in my view (aspects such as scalability, etc). I think we have a good momentum to strength the collaboration with MOPS, as well.
