I have had simmilar issues.

one source for me has been the RF cable between the antenna and dongle. it
actualy works well for under 500' without the yagi...

the 10.00 adapter is a good idea to eliminate the patch cable, I need to
get one of those.

The other is the i have the 7 element, i have heard that by taking off the
front half, it lowers the directionality of the antenna, and increases the
signal at short ranges when not exactly lined up with the TM. Probably
okay if you only going a few thousand feet.
Rotating the yagi, from horizontal to vertical also helps...

LOS is key with the tm. I live on the crest of a hill, I can arm the tm in
my front yard, and exit my horseshoe drive which goes down the hill. the
crest blocks all reception... if i drive about 1.5 miles further I can go
to the corner store about .75miles away, and have excellent reception. but
its LOS from my yard. Yes, the truckers pumping deisel on thier rigs had a
look of concern with me sticking that big yagi out.
