Could be interesting to experiment with. The coolest solution to this problem I've seen so far is the work on cylindrical patch antennas done by the team at Portland State. The geometry gets a bit challenging at 70cm, but you might find some interesting ideas in their comms web section at http://psas.pdx.edu/communications/. Bdale
