RE removing the protection circuit board: I ended up doing this for a couple of batteries I got from https://www.sparkfun.com <https://www.sparkfun.com/products/341> (as helpfully suggested by Keith Packard when I was in a rush)
I'm anything but a good solderer, but this was easier than feared. Just wanted to let people know that if they've done a little soldering, it's quite likely "they can do it!"
