Heck,
One doesn't have to use a cellphone.  I wanted a larger screen so I just
purchased a Nexus 7 2013 Flo which is WiFi onlywith 32Gb.  I can download and
use the cached maps.  AltosDroid is the program that does it right.
A person could use a "beater" phone that has no cell service as long as it has
a GPS receiver in it, has WiFi to download maps to cache and bluetooth to
connect to the TeleBT or a cabled remedy for any other connection.
APRS Droid can be used the GPS track if one uses a B/T TNC with an H/T of their
choice.

It works fine on my old Samsung S3.  Carrier shouldn't matter.  It even works
when there is no service available.   It took me right to my rocket when it
landed a mile and a half away in the sage brush.
