Heck, One doesn't have to use a cellphone. I wanted a larger screen so I just purchased a Nexus 7 2013 Flo which is WiFi onlywith 32Gb. I can download and use the cached maps. AltosDroid is the program that does it right. A person could use a "beater" phone that has no cell service as long as it has a GPS receiver in it, has WiFi to download maps to cache and bluetooth to connect to the TeleBT or a cabled remedy for any other connection. APRS Droid can be used the GPS track if one uses a B/T TNC with an H/T of their choice.
