The design of the pyro circuit used on all of our current products makes
use of a single cell LiPo completely safe, because it arranges to
deliver the maximum amount of energy possible to the pyro device without
allowing the processor voltage to droop. All of my own flights use a
single LiPo cell per flight computer.

The only time I actively recommend separate pyro batteries is when using
pyro channels to initiate motors for complex flights where the
initiators use something other than a low-current ematch. In those
cases, a higher voltage battery and/or one with significantly higher
energy capacity than any of the LiPo batteries we sell may be
appropriate.

Your note did cause me to realize that the document I wrote about
how to use a separate pyro battery predates our current pyro circuit and
thus at least implies a separate pyro battery is more important than I
think it is with current Altus Metrum products. Read it with a grain of
salt:

Similarly, the even older document I wrote when we first had supplier
issues with LiPo battery protection circuit boards describes accurately
our first and second generation pyro circuits, but completely pre-dates
the current circuit. The document I mean is this one, which can/should
mostly be ignored at this point:

I've put an item on my to-do list to update those documents to at least
bound their applicability so nobody gets confused about their content
going forward...

Bdale
