Then I'm totally confused.  Amrecover said this:

It thought this was the current working directory.  You're saying this
directory does not exist???  Note the '-' instead of '/' in admin1-home,
if that matters.

What I was trying to say was that this:

>Added /sybase/log/sybase_error.log

really means this whole tree (/sybase/log) will be restored into
whatever the amrecover current working directory and *.log should be
down inside there.  The file itself will not be back in the original
location (unless you run amrecover from the top of the backed up area)
and it will not be in the top of the current working directory (it will
be down in the same file system relative subdirectory).

If none of that is happening, then you need to look at amidxtaped*debug
on the tape server to make sure amrestore found the image at all and
amrecover*debug on the client for errors.
