Since generally the various medium formats are specified in
international standards and the drivers have to abide by them, I would
say no, you don't need to format a medium just because you change the
platform. But don't expect the data to be readable in both platforms -
this may or may not be the case, even though the format remains the
same. 

This is the concrete situation with the QIC standards and the ftape
driver which implements them in Linux. I don't know if this is the case
with DLT too, but I would expect so.
