No. I think .amandahosts. would still need to exist.

Yes. If the backup server is called "backupserver.my.domain" then you
have to add:
backupserver.my.domain amanda
to ~amanda/.amandahosts.
There also appears to be a "kerberos" authenticated amanda (kamanda) but
I've not ever used it...
