You do realize 40 GBytes is a marketing number, right? How much
compression you get is highly data dependent. I get around 35% (i.e.
my number would be 27 GBytes for the same base 20 GBytes w/o compression).

Do you want to use hardware compression or software? If software,
you need to make changes to your amanda.conf file to add the "compress"
keyword to the dumptypes you're using (or create new dumptypes based on
ones that are close and add the keyword). You'll also need to decide
whether to compress on the client or the server and whether to use "fast"
or "best" compression. This is all in the amanda(8) man page as well
as the other documentation.

If you want to use hardware compression, that's an OS specific question
that has nothing to do with Amanda. As I recall, it's an "mt" operation
for Linux. Try "man mt".

Make sure you don't try to use both hardware and software at the same
time. You can mix different types of software compression, if needed.
