Could it be that the backups were run (and so the index files were
generated) with GNU tar 1.13?  That version, known to be broken for
restores, will also generate wrong file listings, causing index files
to be generated incorrectly.

If that's the case, you'd better just delete the incorrect index files
(after verifying the file names in the gzipped index files all start
with large numbers), use amrestore for now, and make sure all your
further backups use a working version of GNU tar.
