Sure. Write the code to get the values out of amanda.conf and submit
the patch :-).

I'm running 2.4.2 on almost a hundred machines and have been doing so
for months.

This comes up once in a while. I think the general consensus was that
it is not currently possible (not sure why -- I don't know much about
ssh tunneling). The SECURITY-API with 2.5.0 is supposed to make that
more likely.
