I believe that the latter approach is the one generally used.
In my case, I have the script rune "amcheck" at the end (to have some
semblance of a reality check that all is in order for the next backup
run). Since I'm using an autoloader, running amcheck ejects the tape
that was most-recently written (and tries to find the next one to
write).
