There was also COMPRESS_EXTENSION.  A bit of hacking to ./configure
made it work with bzip2!  All I had to do was gunzip and then bzip2
the *.gz files on the tape server.

I can now rest in peace knowing that my backups will not be destroyed
by one errant bit :-)
