David,
Apologies, I was writing from memory, I have just looked up the data
sheet of the DLT1 and its transfer rate is 3Mbytes/sec uncompressed
6Mbytes/sec compressed.
The point I was trying to make is that there are two distinct 40/80Gbyte
tape drive.
I have recently purchased purchased a Quantum DLT8000 in an Overland data
tape changer and have reused about 30 of our DLT4000 tapes at the higher
capacity without problems. Just doubled the capacity in amanda.conf and
put the tapes in as usual. All works as before but at the higher capacity,
no re-labelling or anything needed.
It is also in the DLT1's FAQ that media written in an incompatible format
must be degaussed before it can be written in a Benchmark DLT1.
This was the major reason I did not purchase a DLT1, replacing all our
media would have been far more expensive that purchasing a Quantum
DLT8000, and because of security reasons I am unable to send tapes off-site
for degaussing.
Regards
Tim.
