As others have mentioned, it's basically just like the server. If you
want, you can disable building some parts, but I don't bother.

Yes, it would be overkill, but I doubt that's what most people do.
This is more of a general Unix admin question than an Amanda issue,
which is why it's not in the docs (we don't cover how to type commands
to the shell or use an editor, either :-).
In my case, I build one copy for each unique type of host (usually
based on hardware and OS), then rdist the result around. To make
my life easier, I install Amanda into its own little area (e.g.
/opt/amanda-2.4.2), but that's just a detail.
