Ok... (tapehost isn't really named "tapehost" and the client isn't called "myclient",
but for arguments sake... my boss won't allow me to reveal the actual names of the
servers...)

# amdump DailySet1 ; amdump DailySet1 ; amdump DailySet1 ; amdump DailySet1 ; amdump
DailySet1

( I have 5 tapes in my tapecycle )

and then

# amrecover DailySet1
AMRECOVER Version 2.4.1. Contacting server on taphost ...
220 tapehost AMANDA index server (2.4.1) ready.
200 Access OK
Setting restore date to today (2000-11-30)
200 Working date set to 2000-11-30
200 Config set to DailySet1
200 Dump host set to myclient
Can't determine disk and mount points from $CWD
amrecover> setdisk /bin
200 Disk set to /bin.
amrecover> cd bin
/bin/bin ( <--- Actually, this is kinda strange way to put
it... is there a reason to why amanda says /bin/bin instead of just /bin???)
amrecover> add dd ( <--- I'm just recovering the "dd" binary here... for
testing)
Added /bin/dd
amrecover> extract

Extracting the files using tape drive /dev/st0 on host tapehost.
The following tapes are needed: DailySet101 ( <--- I've named the tape
DailySet101, DailySet102, DailySet103, DailySet104 and DailySet105.)

Restoring files into directory /root ( <--- This is the directory from where I
started the amrecover program)
Continue? [Y/n]: y

Load tape DailySet101 now ( <--- Ok, so I do that....)
Continue? [Y/n]: y
spcl.c_filesys= / (dir bin)
dirptr = (dir bin)
dirptr =
filesys = /
./bin/dd is not on the tape
set owner/mode for '.'? [yn] y ( <--- One might wonder why this is asked....?)
amrecover> exit
#

Ok, that's it. There might be typos in here since I had to copy everything by hand
from one screen to another.

However, last night I did a test run where I set the date one day ahead on all servers
between each time I ran amdump. That worked great! No missing files. This might be as
easy as "stupid Fredrik! You can't run amdump any number of times the same day!" but
still... shoudn't amanda check to see that she NEVER overwrites her last full backup?

/Fredrik
