I assume that you are using:

* the latest dump (http://dump.sourceforget.net /)
* the latest GNU tar

This says to me that you're using GNU tar. GNU tar can be quite fussy
about what exists and where. That exclude-list file should exist even if
it's empty; I think AMANDA will successfully ignore a missing file but
why take chances when you're getting weird problems? Furthermore, I got
the same error trying to backup with the GNU tar that came with RedHat
6.2 and had to get the latest version.

Make sure that amandates is owned by the amanda user and the group you
run amanda as. Furthermore, I thought it was meant to be a file not a
directory...it is on my systems. This could be the problem!

We probably don't need the index debug files at the moment (how is it
going to index if it can't dump :-) ?)
