What happens if you do this:

  $ mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
  $ amrestore no-such-host

What about this:

  $ mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
  $ mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1
  $ amrestore no-such-host

What operating system are you using?  What kind of tape drive?
