Welcome!!!

>1.) Does Amanda configure and manipulate the Sun DDS3 autochanger ?

It's a little hard to tell without a model number (even then I don't
know that we'd have a solid answer). However, Amanda typically uses
simple wrapper scripts around some other program that knows how to talk
to the changer. For instance, mtx, or simply doing an "mt offline".
There's almost always a way to get Amanda and the hardware happy with
each other.

Possibly, but I wouldn't suggest using it. Amanda has a number of
important things compiled in to it, such as user names and security
options. You're much better off building from source, which this list
can help you through if you bang into problems.

Have you found http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html yet?

I'm not sure what an "autochanger" is, i.e. what makes it different than
a "changer" or "robot" or any of the other terms.
