invalid mid from server

I am using amanda 2.4.2 and samba 2.0.7 to backup to backup a Windows
NT machine (among others).  amdump fails with the following error
message:

? code 0 opening remote file \talks\cern092600.ppt (\talks\)
? invalid mid from server!
sendbackup: error [/usr/bin/smbclient returned 1]

Does anyone know the source or remedy for this "invalid mid from
server" error?
