Presumably because the former (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1) is what you put in the
appropriate disklist file.
(It is my understanding & expectation that the "permission denied"
message you saw was generated not by a component of amanda (per se), but
by the underlying "dump" (or "ufsdump") or (GNU) tar program.)
