That would certainly make things difficult.

As Johannes said, the easiest fix is to use the -d option on amrecover.

Amidxtaped does not know about your tapedev amanda.conf entry because
it does not know about Amanda configurations (it could be set up to run
on a machine without the proper amanda.conf).

Do you really have tapedev set to "/dev/tape"?  That doesn't look right.
Amanda must be given a non-rewinding device name, which usually has an
'n' in it, e.g. /dev/rmt/0n.
