.amandahosts and root access

        I am trying to backup /etc directory on a remote machine. I used
the .amandahosts file to connect to that machine. It works when I connect
as a regular user, (i.e. 'amanda') but it wouldn't allow me to log in as
root. 
        How can I log in as root?
