I am having a problem reading the tapes written by Amanda. This is a
new install using a Seagate Travan IDE drive. Amdump seems to run fine
and there is definitely data written to tape as I can read chunks back
with 'mt fsf' and 'cp /dev/tape whatever'. However both amverify and
amrecover report end of tape almost immediately. What gives? Any help
is much appreciated.

Configuration:

debian 2.2
kernel 2.4.0
amanda 2.4.1p1-12 (debian/stable)
ide-tape version 1.16f
Seagate STT20000A (Travan TR-5 IDE)
/dev/tape symlink to /dev/nht0
