Have you read docs/INSTALL and http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html?
In brief, you need amanda/amandad on every client.
You need amandaidx/amindexd and amidxtape/amidxtaped on the tape server
machine if you're going to use amrecover.
If that isn't what you were asking, please clarify.
