I suspect you'll get better performance if you install the Amanda client
software on those machines and back them up directly rather than through
NFS. You also won't have to open up permission issues between the client
and server (the server would need root access to the client disk), and
you can still choose between dump and GNU tar (NFS would require GNU tar).
