Welcome to Amanda!
I don't use OpenBSD, but the general advice from the developers is to
build from source rather than take someone elses binaries. There are
quite a few things built into the Amanda binaries (e.g. paths to programs
it uses, user names and so on) that you would have to depend on the
RPM builder to get right for your configuration.
Building from ports, if I understand what you mean, just does a source
build for you, getting the original tarball from someplace. As long as
it gets the most recent version (2.4.2p1) and you can tweak the top level
ports Makefile to match what you want, then this is going to be a little
easier than running the steps yourself. I use ports for a lot of things
(although not on OpenBSD) and they are a life-saver.
In case you haven't found them yet, here are some other references for
working with Amanda (in addition to the normal files that come with
the source):

Beyond these, please post here when (probably not if :-) you run into
trouble. This mailing list is really good at helping new users get going.
