No, you can use whatever user you want. It goes before the '%' in
/etc/amandapass.

I've "enhanced" the logging in the latest sources. But I doubt that
will help much in your case.
>vedder> smbclient '\\ozzy\home' -U backup%<password>

>Connection to ozzy failed
Ummmm, if this basic connection won't work, Amanda is certainly not
going to be any better.
So the question is, why the timeout? I tried some experiments:
* Connecting to a share with the wrong password:
session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a
Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)
* Connecting to a bad (non-existant) share but with the right password:
tree connect failed: ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (Invalid network name in tree connect.)
* Connecting to a share I don't have permission for:
tree connect failed: ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (Invalid network name in tree connect.)
* Connecting to a machine not running SMB:
error connecting to 128.210.135.25:139 (Connection refused)
Not a timeout in the bunch. So it looks to me like you have some general
Samba/Win2000 issues (or maybe a firewall???) to work out before throwing
Amanda into the mix. But I'm getting in way over my head at this point.
