For one thing, I recently applied changes to the source to do better
Samba logging and to protect the password.

Does it fail when you use amcheck? What's in /tmp/amanda/selfcheck*debug
on the Samba machine?
I assume the Samba machine is running Amanda 2.4.2+? That's where it
counts, not on the tape server.
