This is the most common error to get on a new installation and is covered
pretty well in the FAQ (www.amanda.org).  Have you checked those items?

If that doesn't help, post back here what you tried and what happened.
Please include what version of Amanda you're using.

The exit status of 0x100 says amandad terminated itself (as compared
with getting a signal) with an exit code of 1 (the upper 8 bits).
Look at /tmp/amanda/amandad*debug on the client, or else follow the
FAQ steps about running amandad by hand and I suspect it will tell you
what it's not happy about.

Note that once inetd gets ticked off at a service and "terminates" it
(because it appears to be dying), you'll have to send another HUP to
make it listen again (or wait 10 minutes, depending on what version
of inetd you have).  As Ben mentioned, make sure netstat shows someone
listening before retrying amcheck.
