First of all the answer to all the other questions is yes.

This is the answer that did the trick.
I had looked at the gcc optimization, but decided it defaulted to none and
didn't see where it was getting turned on.
I modified the configure script to remove optimization from the gcc compiler.

And presto, I don't get the seg faults any more.

Thanks, now I am able to successfully backup and recover using amanda and the
gcc compiler.

Now to write all my notes down, so I'll remember how I got here.
