We had been using Amanda on our 430M jukebox happily for a couple months, but it started to become unreliable. We talked with Exabyte today and they recommended upgrading our firmware. They are sending us a code download tape with which to accomplish this. We had been scratching our heads about this for a few weeks before deciding that there was something just plain wrong with the tape drives. I did a search on the net and found this URL: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=mammoth_info We're running amanda and not Retrospect, obviously, but the report looks exactly like what was happening to us (FreeBSD was reporting 'track follwing' errors even on brand new tapes). We have not gotten our upgrade yet, but I wanted to pass all of this along in case anyone else was banging their head against a wall over this. If you have FreeBSD, you can identify the firmware rev with 'camcontrol inquiry bus:target:lun'. The version should be the third string inside of the <>s. This is also output by the kernel at boot time. There is also probably a way to get at this from the front panel of the jukebox.
