I retried my test case using GNU tar 1.13.19 built with Sun cc and
with gcc-2.95.3. Both work fine. So it was a bug with 2.8.1.
I didn't say it very well in the original post, but I was not trying to
knock GNU tar (well, maybe just a little :-). As Dan Wilder said, the
important point is that you can never do enough backup/restore testing,
no matter what you use.
Thanks to all for the compiler tip. I would have spent quite a bit of
time digging through GNU tar hunting that down.
