Trick 1:
set chunksize to less than 2 G (I have it at 256M I believe)
Real solution:
Upgrade your machine to a 2.4 kernel with glibc 2.2
(preferably a 2.4.4 kernel (or one with the knfsd patched in there)
NFS is broken in earlier kernel (at least for reiser).
Oh, and reiser rocks ..
It's immensly pleasing to see the system no longer fscking after a reboot
