Well to me it appears to be rather a problem in managing multiple
files on the tape, so as amverify cannot read one file properly, it
sends garbage to gzip, that sends garbage to tar that etc.

I had the same problem (I am only in testing phase) and despite the
amverify error, I could amrecover properly. Thos I did not check the
integrity of what I recovered, bt the tape read, unziped, untar, etc
properly.
