The way I set my spindle numbers for Samba backups was based on CPU load on
the *nix box running Samba. I started with all of them on different
spindles, then lumped them together until I got down to a reasonable CPU
load (2.0 or so). You could probably keep testing different configurations
until you find the balance between load and time that you are seeking.
