I visited the location http://www.gnu.org/directory/tar.html. Have a look nearly at the
top of the page. As you can see the version is:

As Alexandre wrote, you can use it. The newest gtar I found at alpha.gnu.org. But,
unfortunately currently I can't connect to it and find out the latest version on
it.
