Only the "Amanda user" can run Amanda programs (except amrecover, which
must be run as root). The "Amanda user" is hard coded into the Amanda
programs at the time ./configure is run with the --with-user argument
(which is one reason RPM's don't work well).
Apparantly whoever set up your version of Amanda set it up to run as
user "operator". If you want to do something else, you'll have to build
Amanda yourself and set --with-user appropriately.
Note that Amanda typically does *not* run as root. There is no need
for it to and it is almost always built to run as some "normal" user
(such as "operator").
