I probably would not change the shell for "bin" (but I would not have
made it "/dev/null", either -- I probably would have used "/bin/false").

My suggestion would be to create a user specifically for doing backups
(we use "backup", many people use "amanda"), then control access to
that as tight as possible.

That may vary from OS to OS.  For instance, the way I set up the user
on Solaris is different than on AIX because Solaris lets me "su" to it
with one group of settings and AIX insists on different settings.
