I choose to do that using amcheck instead
I see several advantages: it emails automatically, check the tape
status, check the clients...
I taught my guys to change the tape in the morning when the previous
back-up is over (new tape name is at top of amdump report).
Then I run amcheck via cron a 15:00, 15:45 and 16:00
There is a side advantage, sometime with FreeBSD, the tape device
hangs at the 1st action on that tape. So I am sure it hangs on the
amcheck and not on the amdump.
I should also consider avoiding back-up when the tape has not been
loaded (holidays).
