Did you mean to say there is *not* an index file being created?
Does /usr/adm/amanda/index exist? Does your Amanda user have permission
to create new files/directories in it?
What version of Amanda are you using? Recent versions will test for
some of these permission problems, so what does amcheck have to say?
The index files do not go directly in the index directory. Instead,
a directory tree is set up with hostnames at the top (within indexdir),
then (slightly altered) disk name directories and finally the index
files are in there. Did any of this directory tree get created?
