dump/restore are generally filesystem/OS specific.

Are you sure that is GNU tar?  /bin/tar on my Sol7 boxen sure doesn't look
like GNU tar.  AFAIK Sun has always shipped their own tar.

Probably.  I would recommend installing GNU tar 1.13.19 (from
alpha.gnu.org) and using GNU tar to backup the Solaris box.
