Hello,
To be quick I will not describe why I would like to see this, but ask
the question directly.
I understood and I hope I am correct, that a level 0 is a full backup,
level 1 is diff from last 0, level 2 is diff from last 1, etc.
Considering a system where I have very few tapes (lots of data,
expensive tapes, etc etc etc), I would like to use only level 0 weekly
and level 1 daily (4 days a week). Amanda would now require me to use 2
tapes for level 0, and 4 for level 1.
There is an extra level of redundancy that I simply do not need and is
wasting 2 tapes. I would like to use only 2 tapes for level 1, in one
cycle, for 4 days.
Let's number the tapes 1 2 3 4. I would like to use them like this:
Mon: level 0 on 1
Tue: level 1 on 2
Wed: level 1 on 3
Thu: level 1 on 2
Fri: level 1 on 3
Mon: level 0 on 4
Tue: level 1 on 2
and so on.
Is it possible using just one configuration? I got it working with two
configs, one for full, one for incremental level 1, but it's a pain when
it comes to restoring. I would have to restore a full, then an incr,
manually, as amrecover doesn't work with 2 indexes. I also can't use a
different backup system because this is pretty much the only gpl'd one
that can do samba (unless anyone has some ideeas).
I'm sorry I cannot test this as I only have 3 tapes at the moment,
that's why I'm asking you guys. Also, I didn't find the answer in the
docs, faqs or in the archives (as if I could figure out what keywords to
search for...). And if you'll tell me "it's not possible", then my
client will tell me "well that commercial product out there is doing it,
why can't this one?" and we actually both want to promote free
software...
By the way, is anyone working on a GUI/web interface for amrecover? (I
don't really care about setting up the system, because it's one-time,
I just don't want to drive 40 minutes and pay for parking just to
restore the pr0n that the boss erased the other day, or some other
similar event).
One more thing: I noticed an ideea of "amanda doesn't do that, and you
shouldn't, because it's bad" while browsing the archives. Remember that
"some other commercial operating system", by stopping the user from
doing stupid things also stops him from doing smart things. Then
remember that Linux is the other way around. :o) Just a personal
opinion. :)
Thanks,
-Oliver
