An "indexed" backup is simply one for which amanda keeps a table of
contents (or index) on the backup server, for use with amrecover. If you
don't turn on indexing or the index disk dies, you can generate/recover
the index using dump/restore or tar with the appropriate options.
The problem above looks like what happens with known bad versions of
GNUtar. What version of tar are you using? IIRC, 1.13.17 is the minimum
needed to generate a good index.
