Currently, we back up a bunch of windows machines in the office to a Linux
backup server via shell scripts which smbmounts the windows machines, zips
the directories and files and then deposits it on our backup server. This is
robust, works very well, not too secure, sucks up a little too much network
bandwidth, but is very effective and simple to maintain.

However, we are migrating over to new offices and I would like to come up
with a better way to do this. Amanda seems to have a lot going for it.

Very simply however, I need to have Amanda do 4 things (with a fifth
optional):
1) backup Windows 2000 and 98 clients via SAMBA
2) securely (ie no plain text logins and passwords and via ssh best) backup
3) compress via zip or gzip (for our wonder windows users) the resulting
file/files per computer
4) dump it to a backup server rather than tape

5) for bonus points (though not required, I can write a script to do it to
the backup directory: pgp encrypt the archives for ultra-paranoia)

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on where to begin. Most of the ones I
tried merely mentioned AMANDA/SAMBA could handle it AND it was possible to
secure it via ssh but I have had no luck in finding a description of the
process or a cookbook for it.

Thanks
Daryl.
