Hi,
in theory travan-drives do work with linux and amanda,
but don't use HP-drives with recent linux-kernels, for us
they seemd do work correctly at backup-time, but we weren't
able to restore a single file from the tapes.
we made this experience with a HP-tr4 drive.

doublecheck before relying on it.
if you get strange kernel-messages in syslog while reading
or writing from/to the drive be verry carefully.

the devices you ask about are

/dev/nht0

for no-rewinding device and

/dev/ht0

for auto-rewinding mode

hope it helps
